General

Favorite or Personal Order Sets are created specifically by an individual physician if the system has this capability.  Typically, these order sets are only available to the physician for whom they are created.  Sometimes this order set can be “shared” with other users or can be used by non-physicians entering orders on behalf of that physician. (ie: verbal order).  Organization should determine if personal orders sets will be allowed.

 

Advantages 

  • These order sets can be a strong satisfier for the provider users since they are created for maximum efficiency for that individual provider
  • They will likely increase adoption of CPOE

 

Concerns.

  • Content may not be based on evidence best practice
  • Multiple providers may have similar personal order sets

 

Maintenance

  • Based on the system, when an individual orderable on the order set changes, the personal order set may or may not be updated automatically.  Expectations of maintenance need to be set prior to implementation.  For example, how will the personal sets be updated when a lab test is taken out of service and replaced with another?
